Mill Ridge Farm: A Lifelong Love for the Racehorse

New research study and videos related to Thoroughbred Horse Farm Tour, Mill Ridge Farm: A Lifelong Love for the Racehorse.

Mill Ridge Farm is a special place steeped in history. Though the farm was founded in 1962, it’s influence traces much further back than that; Hal Price Headley was a successful owner and breeder of Thoroughbred racehorses. He helped to establish Keeneland, one of the most important racetracks in the country, and served as the track’s president from 1935 – 1951. When Hal Price Headley passed away in 1962, he left his daughter Alice Chandler 286 acres of land and 4 mares that were part of his Beaumont Farm.

Alice went off on her own, working hard to continue on her beloved father’s legacy. With a philosophy that her clients were family and the horse comes first, Alice quickly established herself in the industry. In 1966, she sold a horse named Sir Ivor at the Keeneland July Yearling Sale. That horse went on to win the Epsom Derby in 1968, Europe’s equivalent of the Kentucky Derby. Not only did this make her the first American woman to breed an Epsom Derby winner, but it also ushered in the trend of Europeans coming to Keeneland to look for their next classic winner.

Mill Ridge Farm has been hugely successful in breeding and raising top-notch racehorses. If you were to read over a list of their G1 winners, you’d find names like Point Given, Havre de Grace, and Giacomo. Through Nicoma Bloodstock, Headley Bell and his son Price Bell Jr. have assisted in the matings of horses like Barbaro, Street Sense, and Bricks and Mortar. As of January 29, 2020, Mill Ridge Farm has raised or sold 36 Grade 1 winners. This is a number that will constantly grow.
