There is no such thing as a certainty in horse racing, no matter how much you pay at auction

IF you are thinking of becoming an owner – or at least a part-owner – in a racehorse then perhaps the following list will cause you to think again.

We all know that horse racing is a sport which thrives and survives based on money changing hands at every event.

However, some of the eye-watering sums which have been paid for racehorses over the years would give even the most affluent owner pause for thought.

In fact, even a EuroMillions winner would baulk at some of these prices. Because as we are all very well aware, regardless of the price-tag there is no such thing as a certainty in horse-racing. Here’s our list of the top five most expensive racehorses in the world:

5. MEYDAN CITY ($11.2m/€10.3m in 2006)

Meydan City, a son of Kingmambo, was bred by Jayeff B Stables and sold to Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation in 2006 for $11.7 million as a yearling. This was the second-highest price ever obtained at auction for a yearling. Meydan City raced eight times and managed two wins and a third place over the course of his career. For both of those wins he was ridden by Frankie Dettori at Newmarket over 10 furlongs, carrying the Godolphin colours.

4. SEATTLE DANCER ($13.1m/€11.5m in 1985)

Seattle Dancer was sired by the famous Nijinsky and this famous lineage helped to make him the most expensive yearling sold at auction when he went for $13.1 million in 1986. As a colt he was despatched to Vincent O’Brien’s Ballydoyle Stables but a virus in the yard meant that he never raced as a two-year-old. In fact Seattle Dancer would go on to compete just five times, winning twice (Gallinule Stakes and Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial, both in 1987), and picking up a second and a third place.

3. THE GREEN MONKEY ($16m/€14m in 2006)

Another descendant of Northern Dancer, The Green Monkey (pictured right) was bought for $16 million as an unraced two-year-old but he was not a success on the track, as he competed in just three races with a third-place finish his best result. He was also unsuccessful at stud prior to his death earlier this year.

2. SHAREEF DANCER ($40m/€35m in 1983)

Shareef Dancer was purchased by Maktoum Al Maktoum for $3.3M in 1981 and trained in Newmarket by Michael Stoute. He is one three horses listed in this article who was a descendant of the famed Northern Dancer. Shareef Dancer raced just five times, winning three of these and coming second in a fourth. His wins included the Irish Derby and the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, both in 1983 before being syndicated for $40 million in the same year.

1. FUSAICHI PEGASUS ($64m/€56m in 2000)

The undoubted king is Fusaichi Pegasus, sold privately in 2000 to Coolmore Stud for a record-breaking $64 million having been purchased as a yearling for ‘only’ $4 million. The colt was purchased as a yearling by Fusao Sekiguchi in 1998, setting the scene for the most profitable horse trade of all time two years later. The horse took its name from a combination of the owner’s name ‘Fusao’ and the Japanese word for one, ‘ichi’. The horse lived up to his name and finished first just six times from his nine races, (although one of these was the Kentucky Derby in 2000), earning a total of $2 million during his career as a racehorse. Although he sired Grade 1 winners in the form of Bandini, Haradasun and Roman Ruler, Fusaichi Pegasus failed to live up to expectations at stud.
